In the Press!

Do you read the Sunday Mail's weekly 'HOMEMADE' feature? If you read it and love it as much as we do you may have seen some of our very own BrisStyler's showing off their crafty talents over the past few weeks.

There was Trish from TrishAlan Designs with her rainbow of hand-dyed yarns and fabrics a few weeks back.....

.....and last week it was Teneale from Wicked Child Designs with her 'coolest of cool' softie friends!

How awesome is it that such a widely followed publication has its very own 'HOMEMADE' feature? Can't wait for Sunday to roll around for our next 'HOMEMADE' fix!

Let's Go Shopping

A few sore heads in the BrisStyle office this morning after a raging BrisStyle Twilight Market last night.

The BrisStylers had a great night showing off their awesome handmade wares in Brisbane city's King George Square. We hope you had a wonderful night too!!

Now there's a lot of birthdays in August, and one a few BrisStylers are celebrating today is the Handmade Expo's 3rd birthday. So thought we'd send a lil happy birthday from us, and feature a few BrisStylers that will have a stall at Handmade Expo today. It's a beautiful day, so it should be lovely!! Get your bums over there quick smart though as it's only on till 2pm.

Shop Handmade: Cultiver

It's that time of the month again when we bring you the latest offerings in handmade and indie shopping. This month we caught up with Rebecca Lewis and Kyla D'Aubbonnett from Cultiver to discuss all things handmade, ethical and crafty!

Tell us a little bit about how Cultiver came into being?
Rebecca and I met whilst making coffee in a local Ipswich espresso bar. When we met we had no idea that it would be the start of something incredibly creative.  Over the 12 months that we worked together at the espresso bar we realised that we shared a love of handmade, up-cycling and all things 'granny'.

So, what is Cultiver all about?
Cultiver is the collaboration of our two handmade businesses into a brand new and exciting business.....Cultiver: Indie Arts and Design. Cultiver (cul-tee-vay) is an eco-ethical, handmade, fashion, accessories and homewares store with a designated atelier (workshop) for hosting formal workshops as well as a 'comfy zone' for informal craft clubs or simply lounging around and 'making'.

What are your individual creative pursuits?
Bec has her own label called Little Brown Dog. She is a self professed 'reverse engineer' finding new uses for old clothing and fabrics. I sell felt and fabric pieces under the Little Bird label. I am obsessed with vintage, retro prints and stationery.

How does Cultiver support independent artists and crafters and/or the handmade community?
Bec and I have been 'Craftisans' for a long time and have been through the hard slog of markets and online selling.  Through Cultiver we are determined to raise the status of modern, handmade designers and help them grow through promoting them in a retail venue.  There are over 40 Craftisans supplying Cultiver with their handmade goods and the number is growing with more and more exciting products filling the shelves every week.

How can local designers and crafters get involved with Cultiver?
If you are interested in becoming a Cultiver Craftisan you can send an email to cultivershop@gmail.com and we will send you an application package.

Can you describe the Cultiver retail space?
The retail space is huge and filled with fantastic handmade goodies from all over Australia.  The feel is granny-chic, harking back to the good old days when handmade was a way of life.  We found all of the shop fittings in local second-hand shops, we had many adventures sourcing the amazing pieces.

Where can we find Cultiver?
The combined retail and workshop space is located at 2/126 Brisbane St, Ipswich, with street frontage in the thriving Top of Town precinct.

Opening Hours:
Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm
Saturday - Sunday, 8.30am - 1.00pm

A big thank-you to Bec and Kyla for taking part in our popular 'Shop Handmade' series. You can follow Cultiver online via their blog or facebook page.

Visible Ink!

Visible Ink is part of Brisbane City Council’s Program for young people aged 12 – 26 (NB: There are also opportunities for those who tutor, provide services to or wish to run workshops for young people!! Also if you're 26-30 it's still worth getting in touch).

BrisStyle committee gals Helen and Rebecca recently went to visit their amazing space in the Valley (5 Green Square Close, Fortitude Valley) and met with Visible Ink staff Chrissie and Kate who are awesome and are dying to provide support for creative peeps. While we were there we checked out their space and were overwhelmed by the huge amount of support for creative peeps such as:

- Access to Visible Ink staff to help you with developing your creative business/activity
- Access to computers and internet
- Access to a photocopier, guillotine and other equipment (eg someone had recently popped in to the space to produce their zine - for free!!)
- Access to a meeting room, rehearsal space, art/craft workshop area, kitchen facilities
- Small private offices/studio spaces for creatives

AND IT'S ALL FREE!!! Provided you are:
- aged 12-26 (if so you should definitely get in touch with Visible Ink and take advantage of their resources)
- 26-30 is a bit shady so still worth getting in touch with the staff to discuss your needs
- a group catering to young people or with a significant amount of young members
- and anyone of any age who offers workshops or would like to provide support to young people.

Chrissie from Visible Ink is also on the look out for people who may be interested in being involved in doing workshops for a crafternoon, for example she was recently looking for someone who could run an embroidery crafternoon or a blogging/etsy workshop. If you run workshops and have a  blue card you should get in touch with Chrissie so she can keep you in mind for future workshops/events.

You can contact Chrissie to chat further about any of the above. Her details are:

The Ekka is coming to Brisbane very soon, where we Queenslanders celebrate the history and agriculture of Queensland for ten days. And there's a nice little public holiday squeezed in there too...

Did you know the first showbag was a bag of coal? How sad, though I bet it was a treat at the time. Here's a bunch of stunning BrisStyle bags to keep all your cool stuff safe and looking awesome.
