Once a year our 'green' artisans put their eco crafting practices on show at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market. To check out the stellar line-up of marketeers who will be setting up shop at tomorrow's market pop over here.  You can check out the site map for the market on our website too!

Every handmade item for sale at the Eco Market must meet BrisStyle's strict eco-criteria, guaranteeing ethical shoppers can purchase unique and exquisitely made creations without putting a strain on their wallets or our earth's precious resources. Along with amazing handmade wares, there will also be a selection of vintage, collectible and crafty destash items for sale.

Our much loved BrisStyle Indie Eco Market just wouldn't be complete without our handmade eco lovin' supporters.

Our friends from peppermint magazine will be setting up shop on Saturday to sell collector's editions of the magazine as well as taking new subscriptions.  The perfect Christmas gift idea we think! One lucky market visitor could also WIN a subscription to the fabulous fresh, green, fashion magazine that is peppermint.  To win, all you need to do is pop along to the BrisStyle promo table and vote for your favourite Eco marketeer or product. Easy Peasy!

The lovely ladies and gents from Reverse Garbage will also be coming along on the day with a stash of eco crafting supplies in tow. Up-cycled Christmas decorations perhaps? The Reverse Garbage elves have been busy making decorations for their Christmas tree, so inspiration will be plentiful.

We would also like to say a big green thank-you to Brisbane City Council for supporting three of the 'Make and Take' Workshops that will be happening on the day: Rags to Roses, Origami and make your own Cactus Pincushion.  If you missed out on nabbing a spot in one of these great workshops you won't want to miss tomorrow's post which has a run down on all of the other eco activities that will be happening on the day.

We're so chuffed to announce that BrisStyle has won the support of Brisbane City Council via their amazing Art Bites program.  You may have noticed the little hint we dropped a few posts back when we announced that our next two BrisStyle Information Sessions would be supported by this very program!

BrisStyle Indie Eco Market Tomorrow!

Hey eco-lovers, this is just a friendly reminder that the BrisStyle indie Eco Market will be on this Saturday 6 November 2010 at St Augustine's, Racecourse Road, Hamilton from 9am-2pm.

Our collective fingers and toes and crossed for a bright sunshiney day but if we are blessed with more life-giving rain we'll still be on, high and dry inside the hall!

Showcasing the work of local indie designers, you'll find an inspiring array of homewares, bags, jewellery, accessories, art and loads more, all handmade from upcycled, pre-loved and salvaged materials. With a sprinkling of vintage treasure available too, this is one market not to be missed!

Proud supporters of the BrisStyle indie Eco Market, Peppermint and Reverse Garbage will be along for the day so make sure to pay them a visit for subscriptions, magazines and salvaged craft goodies galore!!

 

All proceeds from our famous handmade raffle will be donated to a very worthy cause, Peninsula Animal Aid.

The PAA team will be onsite on the day with loads of information and advice highlighting the joy of giving a 'forever home' to the abandoned and surrendered cats and dogs they lovingly care for. Make sure to check out our blog and the PAA website for more information on who's up for adoption!

There'll be plenty of great workshops on offer with Brisbane artist Chrys Zantis bringing along her interactive knitting installation, Landscape of Resilience. Needles, hooks, thread, fabric, and wool of all colours will be available to use on the day or you can bring something along to add that you've prepared earlier!

If softies are more your cup of 'green' tea, the Wicked Child Designs stall will be the place to be for a Softies Workshop! Book now and secure your $15 seat (all materials provided) at wickedchilddesigns@yahoo.com.au.

There'll be 'Kool Candle' making at the Spoil and Indulge Natural stall. Make your own colourful fragrance candle in a jar for a special price of $5 each. This is great workshop for the kids too as the candles are made 'heat-free' using ECO friendly coloured wax beads and ribbons and stickers to decorate the jars.

 

You can also try your hand at Kumihimo braiding with workshops being run throughout the day by eco dyer and designer, Trish from Trishalan Designs.

Bring in the kids' (or your own) broken bits of crayon and trade them in for some recycled ones at Nan's Garden. Got a green thumb? Head on over to the Beckybean stall where'll you can get your very own handmade Flower Seed Bombs offered free with every purchase!

New indie craft zine 'bespoke' will be making its big debut on the day and make sure not to miss the kimono fabric sale of the year hosted by Mel from Kimono Reincarnate!

For all the recycled chic fashionistas make sure to pay a visit to ruby red studios and wade your way through the amazing stash of vintage swish!!

Grab yourself a coffee from our friends at Xpresso Coffee and enjoy the classic hits of Music 4 U and ethereal sounds of Gloria the Harp.

There's also heaps of fantastic restaurants and cafe's along the Racecourse Road Precinct so come along, bring the family and make a real day of it!!

*bespoke* zine

There's a new kid on the craft block - *bespoke* zine!

*bespoke* is a brand new Aussie indie zine all about handmade, vintage, photography, craft, art, micro-business and much, much more. It is edited and published by BrisStyle member Jessica Van Den of EpheriellDesigns.com - herself a crafty businesswoman and handmade advocate. And, unlike many of the new e-zine's popping up, *bespoke* is a lovely tactile A5 package - yep, printed in full colour and delivered to your door!

So, what prompted Jess to start *bespoke*? "The thought just came to me one night - that I would love to make a magazine, something tangible that could spread the word about the awesome craft community I found myself a part of. As I am the 'jump in first figure it out later' type, the next day I announced my plans online, and the support was overwhelming! Months later, and after an enormous amount of help and support from the handmade community, Issue 1 of *bespoke* is printed and ready to go!"

Full of interviews, stories, art and photography features, micro-biz advice, tutorials and product features, *bespoke* aims to inspire, nourish, and support the handmade community.

Peninsula Animal Aid

Peninsula Animal Aid is our charity of choice for this Saturday's BrisStyle Indie Eco Market.

Located in Clontarf on the Redcliffe Peninsula, the PAA shelter was established in 1971. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the PAA is dedicated to the care and re-homing of stray and abandoned cats and dogs.

The PAA does not receive government funding and raises much needed funds by washing dogs in weekend hydro-baths, holding sausage sizzles and fetes and from generous public donations.

If you would like to assist the PAA in alleviating animal suffering, here are some ways you can help:

• By purchasing a raffle ticket at this Saturday's BrisStyle Indie Eco Market. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. You could win a basketful of handmade goodies and all proceeds will go to the shelter!


• By donating an item of need for the shelter at the BrisStyle Inc. promo stand. More information can be found here.


• By volunteering at the shelter. As mentioned previously, the PAA is staffed entirely by volunteers. If you would like to assist in the cattery and dog kennels especially on Saturdays from 8am to 2pm please contact the PAA shelter. Contact details can be found here.

Indie Eco Workshops at BiECO

We're so excited to announce a fabulous line up of Indie Eco Workshops taking place at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 6 November at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road Hamilton from 9am-2pm.

Brisbane artist Chrys Zantis will grace the markets with her famous interactive Knitting installation, Landscape of Resilience. Chrys will bring needles and hooks, threads, fabric and wool of all colours. So come and knit and sew with Chrys under the beautiful tree and reflect on your inner resilience.

After much demand, Wicked Child Designs will be running another Softie Workshop! Teneale will be on hand to provide help with constructing a basic softie, and all the materials will be provided on the day so you can have it finished to take home. You can then keep it for yourself, give it to someone for Christmas, or even donate it to Softies for Mirabel! Seats are limited and priced at a bargain $15 each, so book a seat quick smart by emailing Teneale now - wickedchilddesigns@yahoo.com.au.

Sue from Spoil and Indulge Natural will not only have all their Eco-Friendly Candles and Natural Soaps for sale but she will also have her famous "Kool Candles"! Sue will be conducting interactive Workshops where everyone can make their own colourful fragrance candle in a jar for a special price for the BiECO of $5 each. This is great activity for all ages as there is no heat involved in making the candle and you‘ll be using ECO friendly tiny coloured wax beads along with ribbons and stickers to decorate the jars.

Eco dyer and designer Trish from TrishAlan will be demonstrating the super addictive craft of Kumihimo braiding throughout the day and will have her range of eco dyed threads and kits to purchase.

Enrich Your Life With an Oldie!

The BrisStyle Indie Eco Market is now less than 2 weeks away. In support of our chosen charity, Peninsula Animal Aid, we will be featuring a selection of furry friends on the blog each week to assist in finding them all a loving new home. This week we are featuring some of the older dogs currently available at Peninsula Animal Aid.

There's no such thing as a typical oldie, and there's no such thing as a typical home. Maybe you want a companion but your own health means you are unable to satisfy the exercise needs of a young dog. Oldies are often quite happy with a potter around the garden and a 20 minute slow-paced stroll around the neighbourhood.

Some oldies are ideal for families/couples who are active, but out for some of the day. These dogs thrive in a lively household with a couple of brisk walks each day and longer walks at weekends, but enjoy the peace and quiet when their owners are at work, and they're left alone to snooze in their doggy bed.

How many of us know what we will be doing in five years time, or ten? Many people could offer a fantastic home to a dog but 'would like to travel in a few years' or 'will go back to work when the kids start school'. When you take on a pup or a young dog you need to be as sure as you can that you can honour that dog with a home for life, which can be anything up to 18 years or more. With an older dog, the commitment is just as immense, but the time-frame is likely to be shorter.

Obviously oldies are not for everyone but they do have so much to offer. They are generally less problematic than younger dogs that still need guidance and training, given that very few oldies will not have spent at least some of their life in a home environment. For this reason they make ideal choices for first-time dog owners. The reward of knowing that you have given a noble and faithful dog a warm, loving home for the last few years of his life is incalculable.

This week's featured furries include Tazz, Button and Mitchell. Check out their doggy profiles below.

Tazz is an 8 year old Staffy X. He was left tied to the fence at Peninsula Animal Aid with a note saying "Unable to keep him, loves children but dislikes cats". Tazz has a loving personality but is becoming very depressed in the shelter. He wants a family where he can get lots of love and cuddles. Tazz needs to go to a home where he is the only pet, and must have 6 foot fences for his own safety. He needs to be allowed inside as part of his new family.

Cute as a Button! Button is a 7 year old Staffy X. He's house-trained and would like to be an inside/outside boy. He is very nice on the lead. A older family or couple would be best suited for this boy. Button has lived with a smaller dog and seems to like other doggy company. He was adopted from us as a pup and now he is back at the shelter through no fault of his own. Button must go to a home with secure 6 foot fencing for his own safety.

Darling Mitchell is an 8 year old Staffy X. He's an inside/outside boy who loves being with the family. He is wonderful with other dogs, and will be a great family pet if given half the chance! He loves to play doggy games and just wants a family - he will return your love tenfold. His new home must have 6 foot fences for his own safety.
