:: WIN :: Tickets to the Quilts 1700-1945 Exhibition at the Queensland Art Gallery

Quilts stimulate memories of warmth, comfort and security. They are familiar objects, yet carry a range of hidden histories and untold stories about textiles, women’s creativity and the lives of individuals and families. British quilts were often made for display as much as for use in the bedroom. Whether exchanged as commodities, made in professional workshops or created in the home, they became objects of immense family value, handed down through the generations.

‘Quilts 1700–1945’ comes from one of the world’s most important and loved collections of textiles and decorative arts — the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. This exhibition offers visitors an unprecedented opportunity to see over 50 quilted and/or patchworked bed covers, bed hangings and sewing accessories, created over two-and-a-half centuries.

In addition, the exhibition will provide a rare opportunity to view Rajah quilt 1841. This extraordinary patchwork — generously lent by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra — was sewn by women on board the convict ship HMS Rajah, during their transportation to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) in 1841.
Be inspired by these treasures of Britain’s past and marvel at the creativity and skills of the women (and one man!) who made them. Participate in the exhibition’s informative program of talks, tours and workshops; hear the stories hidden within the layers of these beautiful textiles; and gain an insight into the lives of the women, men and children who lived with them.

To thank our social media followers, we are very lucky to be able to give away 4 prize packs including 2 x adult tickets to visit the exhibition. One lucky winner will also win a copy of the Quilts publication.

For an additional entry, please leave a comment on this blog post telling us which form of social media you prefer to follow us on. The competition closes Sunday 16th June at 6pm and the winners will be advised via email.

We will also be giving away tickets this coming Saturday at our BrisStyle indie City Hall Market, so pop along and vote for your favourite stall display to win 2 x adult tickets for yourself and also the 2 x most popular stalls on the day! Prizes will be drawn at 1pm on the day, so make sure you head over to the BrisStyle promo stand to make your vote count!

BrisStyle Craft Caravan - coming to a festival near you!

The BrisStyle Craft Caravan is coming to a community festival near you and will be out on the road this Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Festival, Market Stalls and Workshop Activities
Friday 1 June 10am - 4pm King George Square, Brisbane
Saturday 2 June 11am - 5pm Zillmere Multicultural Festival
Sunday 3 June 9am - 4pm Racecourse Road Carnival

Pull up a deck chair, relax and put yourself in caravanning mode…suburban caravanning mode that is! Think two-toned retro caravans, community created bunting, neighourhood engagement and most importantly hands-on craft and professional development advice delivered by local crafters. (Along with the odd pink flamingo thrown in for good measure.)

The BrisStyle Craft Caravan is set to be a moveable oasis of crafting goodness, which will engage festival goer’s in the suburbs and inner city. The onsite retro caravan will evoke feelings of nostalgia as well as providing a fun and interactive backdrop for a friendly neighbourhood craft-up, appealing to all the family, young and old.  Just like a craft holiday in your own backyard.

"This event is significant because we are taking craft to the people, giving them the opportunity to ask 'how to' questions about their own craft" says BrisStyle Market and Events Coordinator Helen Berthold.

So say hooroo to the crowds and escape on your own crafty retro adventure at the BrisStyle Craft Caravan’s “make and take” suburban oasis.  Participants can drop in and craft the day away using holiday crafting skills from their schooldays. In particular, the June 1 King George Square event will come to life with the extra help of community yarn bombing.  Adventure never looked this easy!

Those wanting creative development advice can check in at Dr Craft’s Q&A caravan where local creatives will be on hand to give advice on all your crafting maladies.

Highlights of the “make and take” workshops:

  • Caravan colouring-in Oasis: Use your own flair and imagination to colour in a variety of retro suburban caravanning items. All ages and colouring outside the lines welcome!
  • MYO Caravan Brooch or Magnet: Create your very own piece of wearable or magnetised nostalgia using your choice of crafting medium. Draw, glue or colour-in a cool quirky caravan shape to take away to your own suburban oasis. Ah the serenity!
  • Community Bunting Project: This project aims to engage and showcase the imagination and crafting talents of the local communities where festivals are being held in the form of bunting.  The finished project will be donated to a key community group in the Hamilton Ward.

Presented by BrisStyle Inc. and supported by Brisbane City Council!

Be sure to pop back in tomorrow and Wednesday for more information about the upcoming BrisStyle Craft Caravan events!

Craft is the new black!

Brisbane’s hottest designers are bringing crafty back to the City this Friday night!

BrisStylette Holly of Pannikin Accessories is gearing up for another big night of craft in the city this Friday night at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market in King George Square.

Holly’s cool and quirky designs are becoming synonymous with a new generation of young designers leading the way in Brisbane’s craft revolution.

“We have become very aware of how important it is to buy and create our own quality handmade goods as opposed to spending money on cheap mass produced items that don't have that same degree of love, care and attention to detail. I also think that craft has gained a new reputation as being very hip and fashion forward without looking stuffy and dated.”

Holly is taking it to the streets this Friday night at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market where ethical consumers have the opportunity to buy the soulful and stylish handmade creations for which BrisStyle is becoming renowned.

King George Square provides the perfect environment to showcase BrisStyle’s talented designers. The central location and proximity to restaurants and public transport makes it the ideal shopping spot for those seeking chic handmade gifts for Christmas.

So come on down and let the Christmas shopping begin!

Kimono Reincarnate SALE at BiDM!

Kimono Reincarnate is having a sale and encourages you to go "nude" at the BrisStyle Indie Designer Market this weekend. There have been some changes happening over at Kimono Reincarnate lately, with new pendant bases, new brooch designs and soon, new packaging.

For the last couple of months, Melanie of Kimono Reincarnate has been slowly changing her fabric and resin ring and pendant bases over to sterling silver plated pieces, accompanied with sterling silver plated chains. She's excited to announce that the switch is now complete! After this weekend, some of the prices will have to go up to reflect the new materials, so this will be a chance to grab a few at their old, lower prices.

At the upcoming BrisStyle Indie Designer Market she will also have her popular landscape pieces back, a format she hasn't used since her work was done with glass. Melanie will also be bringing a sales box of her older pieces and a few good-condition-but-not-quite-perfect seconds. A great chance to grab a few bargains for the Christmas stocking!

Her "Kyoto" series of bamboo and vintage kimono fabric brooches has also recently expanded. The Japanese "kokeshi" dolls are now joined with origami cranes, cast iron teapots, butterflies and "Zen Garden" circles. The Kyoto series boxes have yet to arrive, so they will all have a $5 discount this weekend.

Actually, all of Melanie's boxes are yet to arrive and her pendant tin stock is running low so anything that you see in a tin, feel free to tell Melanie that you'd like to "go nude", or if you're shy, just that you'd like it without a tin, for a $5 discount. She'll happily pop it into a little bag for you to keep it nice and safe.

If you would like to see the entire range of Kimono Reincarnate products and pick yourself up a fabulous bargain pop along to the

"I use vintage and repurposed fabric and notions because I love them and because it is fun to find new ways to use old materials. But with increasing awareness of the environmental damage caused by mass-manufacturing my choice of materials has become more important. I will have a range of products for sale at the BiECO - bags made from repurposed curtains, purses made from vintage fabric, hair pins decorated with vintage buttons, and even some vintage craft supplies."

Check out Ali's fabulous re-purposed wares at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market on Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm at St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds, Racecourse Road, Hamilton. BiECO is proudly supported by Peppermint magazine.

REread Design at BiECO

Our BrisStylers are gearing up to give the earth a big hug at Brisbane's first BrisStyle Indie Eco Market supported by Peppermint. In the lead up to BiECO we'll be giving you a sneak peek into the behind the scenes action of our marketeers.

Kicking it off is the super talented Hayley from REread Design...

"I source almost all of my materials from op-shops, left over/unused stationery from work and a lot of donations (old Christmas cards etc.). For my brooches I hand cut each shape and then give it several coats of resin. My cards are made from old cards, often with a message inside, I paste on a page from a vintage children's book and then find a silly caption to accompany the image. Usually I get the captions from romance novels, an endless source of fun and cheeseisms. No two brooches or cards will be the same as I don't scan and print the images, they are all originals. I just love taking an old Golden Book that has 'had it's day' and making it into a funny card that makes someone laugh. I really love dong the BrisStyle markets, I love that people like my art, and get a kick out of the funny, random words I use."

Check out Hayley's wares and more at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market
Saturday 10 July, 9am-2pm
St Augustine's Church Hall and Grounds
Racecourse Road, Hamilton.

Moose & Bird in Frankie!

A big congratulations to BrisStyle member Melinda from Moose & Bird who's gorgeous pear shaped cushion is featured in the current issue of Frankie!

You can check out more of Melinda's fabulous wares in the co-op section of the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market on Friday night at King George Square, Brisbane City AND at the BrisStyle Indie Mother & Child Market on Saturday 8 May at St Augustine's Church Hall, Racecourse Road, Hamilton.

New Kimono Reincarnate products to be launched at BiTM!

With only 3 more sleeps till the new BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market, Melanie from Kimono Reincarnate shares some exciting news for the big night!

"Only a few more sleeps until the BrisStyle Twillight markets! And quite possibly even less actual sleeps as I’m so excited with still lots to do. Not only do I have a new marquee for the occasion, but I also have two new lines ready to debut on the night.

I’ve been stitching and folding away, preparing my new vintage kimono origami cranes with embroidered wings. Many have “love” and “joy”, but there is also “hope” and “peace”, and a “health” in the making. As the Japanese origami crane is not only a symbol of peace but also traditionally of longevity and fidelity, they make a great gift for new babies, weddings and for any lover of things Japanese.

I keep joking that as my kimono offcuts keep getting smaller and smaller, my range continues to expand as I can’t bear to throw them away. Well, with my new range of sterling silver studs, I don’t think even I can get any smaller. They are lovely delicate little pieces that you wouldn’t believe the detail found in the vintage textiles I use. The resin captures the light to really make them shine as well as preserving that tiny little sliver of history forever.

Now I have one big job left before our lovely market under the stars; a new hanging display for the cranes. The power tools come out tomorrow! Come by and say hi at the market, and I won’t mind if you sneak a peek to check that I still have all my fingers intact."

Check out Melanie's exciting new products at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market this Friday 30 April at King George Square, Brisbane City from 5-9pm!

Rock'n'Wrap prep for the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market

Want to know what's going on behind the scenes at Rock'n'Wrap? With two weeks to go and counting El lets us in on a little sneak peek of her BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market preparations...

"Twilight markets?! How exciting! And so pretty – fairy lights, lanterns....oh good golly, I’ve got none of that. In fact, I’ve got no lighting organised at all! Better get my skates on.

Right, more sterling silver wire ordered. Colourful and unique cabochons all lined up....which ones to use first? Actually, I’ve got some beautiful Queensland Agate ready for the final polishing out the back on my lapidary machines. Shiny as glass, beautiful velvety reds. Maybe I should make some of those into wire-wrapped pendants first. And some gorgeous ocean-coloured malachite/chrysocolla. Got some hot pink druzy crystals here somewhere too... And earrings, there’re fabulous matching lampwork glass beads here somewhere.... oh there they are, plum, lavender, turquoise. I’ve got a lot to work with, and a lot of work to do! Oh, and the ever popular Ear Candy earrings, so simple and dainty. Perfect for making in front of the tellie. TV, what am I talking about, I’ve got a 14-month old, I don’t watch television. And Playschool doesn’t count, we’re too busy dancing and singing to get any jewellery made. Oh, great news. Nonna’s coming to stay for a week, so I can do some uninterrupted wire-wrapping. Huzzah! Absolutely unique and one-of-a-kind pendants, earrings and necklaces for everyone. Well, everyone who comes to the fantastic Twilight Markets, that is ;D See you there!"

You can check out all of El's finished products at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Markets, King George Square, Brisbane City on Friday 30 April, 5-9pm.

Sybella Boutique at the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market

Belinda from Sybella Boutique has been sewing up a storm and is super excited to share a sneak peek of her preparations for the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market! Take it away Belinda...

"Ok so I have been strapped to the sewing machine in preparation for the twilight market. I am beyond excited and can’t wait to see King George Square filled to the brim with all things BrisStyle under twinkling lights. One of the new products I will have available is sybella coin purses – this will be the first market they will be available at. The poor delivery man got a hug from me the when my new shipment of gorgeous Japanese linen arrived. He couldn’t understand my excitement at seeing the Wizard of Oz, rabbits and babushka doll linen but I am sure you can! I ripped the package open before I even signed for it. I will also have a few new and one off designs available on the night. See you there!"

The BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market is on Friday 30 April 2010 from 5pm-9pm at King George Square, Brisbane City.

BrisStyle Indie Designers Market - It's a wrap!

It was a beautiful Brisbane day on Saturday 5 December as over 60 BrisStylettes gathered together to provide a handmade pre-Christmas shopping extravaganza, also known as the BrisStyle Indie Designers Market!

Shoppers gathered inside and out armed with BrisStyle Limited Edition Totes ready to stock up with the wares of local crafters, artists and designers.

Yes, it was a hot day but we wouldn't expect anything less from Brisbane's HOTtest destination for all things handmade. BrisStylettes agree this one set the bar high for our biggest and best market to date!

It couldn't happen without the behind-the-scenes action of our very special Market Co-ordinator Helen and her super assistant for all things BiDM Sophie. And a market wouldn't be a market without BrisStyle's Queen of Efficiency Bel and uber committee gals Robyn, Ali, Bec, Chris and Rebecca.
