Monday Maker - Mandy Made by Mandy Thompson

Grab a coffee and let's have a chat with Mandy from 'Mandy Made''.

Hi Mandy, well the first question we ask everyone is of course,

Do you come from a creative family?

I really do come from a creative family. Both my mother’s and father’s side of the family are creative, and good at making things with their hands: woodwork, painting, sewing, watercolor you name it!

Mum is very creative with pretty much everything she puts her hand to – sewing, embroidery, cooking jams and preserves and even painting when she was younger.

And Dad has an eye for colour and is great when it comes to wood or metalwork, he has also been fantastic when it has come to art projects... more on that in a moment! My sister is also very talented with free hand drawing in black and white.

How about you Mandy, were you creative as a child?

I learnt to sew at a really young age probably before I could reach the foot control. I would make things with the offcuts when my mum would make clothes.

I have always been interested in painting, jewellery and sewing and have always had various stashes of art supplies.

I learnt most of my skills through my family or have been self taught over the years.

In high school though - I got frustrated with myself easily because I didn’t learn “art skills” the traditional way, or it didn’t work the way I wanted it to.

There has been more than one instance where Mum has helped me finish Home Economics sewing projects, or my Dad has come to the rescue and helped me build a Junk sculpture out of recycled materials....

and between you and I –

Dad got an A+ for that one (not me!)

How would you describe your work?

Colourful! Lots of fun colour, and I’m hooked on the charcoal linen fabric, natural linens and denim. I'm also loving the geometric, or floral prints.

How has your work evolved since you started?

My product has had more definition, and my brand definition is probably the biggest change since Mandy Made began.

It sounds cliche, but I guess through art/sewing you get to learn more about yourself and understand your own personality, talents and I guess “what makes you, YOU”.

Being self taught, my skills and abilities have also been refined.

How did you start selling on Etsy?

I actually started selling handmade when I was in high school, I would make jewellery and sell my work on a stand at our local hairdresser who was so lovely and a huge support to me.

And with “Mandy Made” specifically, it started online through Etsy, and the same place most of us started – making for friends and family.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by making everyday life more organised.

Do you reduce, reuse, recycle as part of your creative process?

I’ve always made a point of using all my fabric scraps. In either smaller projects or jewellery.

Can you describe your workspace for us?

My workspace is in my spare room.
It consists of 3 sewing machines and LOTS of fabric choices and is completely dedicated to Mandy Made:
production, stock, supplies and *ahem* my sewing LIFE.

It truly is more than a handmade business, or hobby. I could happily live in there... so long as there was coffee.

What is your favourite thing to make?

When I’m not making for Mandy Made, I really enjoy teaching myself new skills. For the last 12 months I have been teaching myself to make /sew clothes for myself. A slightly different skill set to handbags and accessories.

My favourite item for Mandy Made would have to be the “First Aid Clutch” love these little guys to bits.

How did your shop name come about?

My business name is a pretty self explanatory “Mandy Made” essentially meaning made by me, plus the alliteration makes it fun to say!

The tag line however is a bit of a play on words. It reads “handmade for Me and You” when you look at the Me and You it reads “Mandy”

Where do you see your creative journey taking you in the next 12 months?

Hopefully having the courage to try wholesale selling, and I’d love to try my hand at textile design / surface pattern design.

What’s your top tip to others wanting to break into the handmade/creative market?

If you can’t stop thinking about it... DO IT!

If it makes you happy... DO IT.

I thought about it giving it a go for about 7 years. It made me nervous but so excited. I didn’t want to have the regret of never giving it a go, and my only advice is to don’t try and do it all at once – add on little components in small manageable chunks.

Describe your typical creative day?

Creative day? .... Really it’s a creative moment, or a creative weekend.

I still work a full time job, I spend my weeknights editing photos and working on my online store / listing information, reading and doing any planning.

And my weekends are either spent with BrisStyle markets or in my creative workspace sewing when not spending time with the family or other commitments.

Do you have a favourite quote?

Quotes and positive affirmations can be something quite inspiring, of which I have many.
So many fit our everyday or our creative lives. Here's a sample:

“just keep swimming” – Dory

“whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right” – Henry Ford

“Everything will be all right in the end, if its not all right, its not yet the end” - The best exotic marigold hotel

Do you like to listen to music or watch TV while creating?

Music + podcasts....

Music - I can't lie, I’m a sucker for Keith Urban while sewing. (Just don’t listen to my singing!)

Podcasts – I have many, but my top three that I Love, love, love, and won't miss, would be:
* create & thrive - great info and really inspirational and SO relatable
she percolates - great girls, always a good laugh and interview some really creative people and even discuss everyday life
* elise gets crafty - love her interviewing style, and the subjects she talks about!

What is your favourite handmade item that you have bought?

I have many... also if I'm not making a gift, I generally try to purchase handmade.

My favourite items I've bought recently as a gift to someone, would be the little cement planters by “vessel and vine” or fudge from “I heart coffee, tea, fudge” - seriously good!

One item I would like to buy one day in the future is basically anything from “Hello Halsted Jewellery".  If I can snap something up before it all sells out!

How long have you been a member of brisstyle and what made you join?

Approximately 12 months. I participated in the Etsy pop up November 2014 and joined soon after as it was great to be involved and I felt it was a great community environment, everyone was encouraging and supportive.

How did you find out about BrisStyle?

Because I visited the city hall market one day when I was in the city, before I even had Mandy Made as a business.

Why do you craft Mandy?

SANITY! Honestly, that’s the short answer!

The long answer is – it’s a creative inspiration release.

I can’t sit still, and go a bit loopy if I don’t have the opportunity to do something creative.

Thank you so much Mandy for sharing your thoughts with us.

See you at the next BrisStyle market.

Monday Maker - Meet Huis Design

This week I have selected another newcomer to Brisstyle as our Monday Maker.

Meet Juliette Hooper and her label Huis Design.

Hi Juliette,

Were you creative as a child/do you come from a creative family?
I was always drawing as a child and if I could get my hands on clay I would go for hours. My Dad is very creative; he has spent much of his life restoring antiques, and he is a painter, quite successful too.

How would you describe your work?
Bold, simplistic with touches of modernism and yet the timber softens the look and adds natural elements.

How has your work evolved since you started?
I was following a vintage vibe for quite a while so it started with a rockabilly feel. I am now developing and forever created my own look, I think through my love of the retro era and art deco, my work has evolved into a slight modern look.
How did you start selling online/ via Etsy?
It was a fairly natural flow on from the markets I’m doing, it’s so simple to use with the appropriate apps etc.
Who or what inspires you?
I’ve recently come to find Lisa Messenger, she is very inspirational. My sister-in-laws, they have their own businesses and have been a wealth of support to me. Buildings, nature, shapes, the all play their part.
Do you reduce, reuse, recycle as part of your creative process?
I try to use only local timbers, and the waste from larger cut objects is always used in some way and all our products are painted with low VOCs.
Describe your studio/workspace?
It’s basically a 1200mm desk! Yes, I really should fix that! It’s surrounded with colour swatches, art and quote, things I love.

What is your favourite thing to make?
Probably my triangle necklaces, I can mix each one up with metal and spikey bead, they all start the same but once strung on leather the look changes for each one.
How did your business/shop name come about (if applicable)?
My mother is from Holland, huis means home or house in Dutch, I have plans to expand the homewares section of huis design and cross over into interior design.
Where do you see your creative journey taking you in the next 12 months?
At the moment we are looking into getting some pretty cool machinery set up and from that bigger scaled items will be produced, homewares etc. It’s going to be fun.
What’s your top tip to others wanting to break into the handmade/creative market?
If you love it, jump in.
Describe your typical creative day?
Do the school drop off and get into it, if I have a market coming up I’m generally working in the studio putting pieces together. I’ll check my email a few times a day and post at least twice a day on Instagram. There are always tunes playing and copious amounts of tea flowing.

What is your Favourite quote?
Follow your bliss
Music or movie while creating?
Music
What is your favourite handmade item that you have bought?
They are some very new stacking rings from Glass Rainbows, they are really beautiful. Denise is so talented.
Where can we find you online?
Instagram @huisdesign
How long have you been a member of BrisStyle?
This is my first year, I wanted to join for a long time and have finally taken the step, and have found it so worthwhile for my business.
How did you find out about BrisStyle?
Social media
Why did you become a member?
Community support, to meet likeminded people, develop my knowledge and learn.
Why do you craft?
It just wants to come out of me, I tried to stop once but I just kept coming back to it. I think it’s built in, I love it and it’s fun. I like the way it makes others feel too, that’s a big plus.
Thanks so much Juliette, it was great chatting to you. Stay tuned for our next week's Monday Maker!

Monday Maker - Meet Yvonne & Dolly from Lemondoll

This week we will get to know Yvonne from Lemon Doll Illustrations and her gorgeous caravan studio, Dolly.

Read on to find out what makes her creatively tick.

Hello Yvonne, and thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us today.
Firstly I'm curious to know.

Were you creative as a child?
I recall keeping a day to day Diary as a child and always wanting to draw little depictions of my very important or hugely dramatic day!  Mum gave me this Diary on a recent visit from Ireland and I couldn't believe she had looked after it all these years. My amazing Mum x

I enjoyed Art at school but never pursued it.  Instead I chose secretarial studies, however, when I had my first little girl we began drawing pictures on her chalkboard and low and behold my love for drawing was pretty much reignited.

Do you come from a creative family?
Definitely. They never sit still for a second. Mum is always rummaging around looking for her next project to upcycle/paint/wallpaper.

Dad has practically built their beachside cottage from scratch and my brother is very talented hair colourist (proud sis here).

How would you describe your work?
My hobby is my work and I am genuinely delighted to be doing what I love most and making a living from it.

I have a passion for everything and anything with a connection to the past. I seek out vintage crockery and hand draw a variety of illustrations directly onto the plates, cups, and vases.

They can feature cute little buildings from my local village Sandgate, vintage suitcases, old world quirky characters and gorgeous plush antique household items and furniture.

I also love to draw illustrations on paper and create little characters who while away the hours frolicking with friends.  Each character has his or her own quirky personality.

How has your work evolved since you started?
I took the transitional step from drawing on chalkboard to drawing on paper.  Although, I have been known to improvise and draw on whatever is close at hand i.e. chocolate boxes, paper plates, receipts and planks of wood!

I love the sheer simplicity of drawing on paper with pencil.  I have recently begun creating digital images from my hand drawn illustrations and applying clean crisp lines.  My favourite part is the colouring in. Bliss!

How did you start selling online?  I went along to an Etsy market a few years ago after having my first bambino and was really impressed by the quality and professionalism on display.

I was an Etsy virgin if it’s okay to say that!! I walked away hugely inspired with a head full of dreams and possibilities and that general feeling of “Wow there are other people besides me that enjoy sitting down and doing something creative.

Who or what inspires you?
My illustrations have been inspired by a ridiculous amount of both personal and awe inspiring memories in my life.

♥ watching old world movies with my cousins
♥ being mesmerized by the beautiful, glamorous and glitzy stage costumes
♥ inhaling the elegant and jaw dropping vintage fashions of the day or as my Nan would say the ‘rig outs’
♥ being fascinated by the neat as a pin and not a hair out of place vintage hairstylesI have truly unruly hair!
♥ am smitten when I see beautiful hand crafted antique furniture and gorgeous Georgian/Victorian round silk cushionsand last but not least;
♥ My heart skips a beat when I see some of the beautiful ornate colonial buildings in Sandgate and Brisbane surrounds.

Do you reduce, reuse, and recycle as part of your creative process?
The three R’s are most definitely the way to go.

How is your art eco-friendly?
By Recycling and reusing vintage crockery and injecting them with a little extra personality whilst not completely taking away from the integrity of the piece.
Saving these beautiful treasured pieces from landfill is paramount to me.

Can you tell us a bit about Dolly
My Art Studio is my 1954 Vintage Caravan “Dolly”.  I found her on gumtree and it was love at first sight.  Dolly is my Art and Craft sanctuary!  Originally grey and white in colour she is now a combination of colours and textures.  Think Kath Kidston meets Laura Ashley meets Retro!

I miraculously house pretty much most of my stock in Dolly. My pencils, watercolour paints, brushes, ink pens, paper, cardstock, jewellery pieces, and crockery.  I have even managed to squeeze in my supersized Printer!

It took me a while to organise a place for everything.  I now know where most of my stuff is which a miracle in itself for me! Plus I had to clean her up for photos for this interview!

What is your favourite thing to make?
Of late my favourite thing to make is patterns.  What a wonderful feeling it would be for me to see one of my patterned designs on fabric. I have that one on my list of goals to achieve.

How did your business name Lemon Doll come about?
I had been trying to come up with a name for ages and just couldn't seem to find anything that made me reach that va va voom moment until one day I heard someone ask for a label in a shop called Living Doll and the name “Lemon Doll” sprung to mind.  I felt it had a vintage twist (pardon the pun!)

Where do you see your creative journey taking you in the next 12 months?
I would ideally love to see Lemon Doll Illustrations holding a really strong market and retail presence over the next 12 months.

It would be a huge sense of fulfilment to see my stock selling well at the Marketsat the gorgeous local Hand Made Artisan stores in Brisbane, and last but not lease selling wonderfully Online over the next 12 months.  How good would that be? Must put that down on my Vision Board!!

What’s your top tip to others wanting to break into the handmade/creative market?
Keep an Ideas notepad on you at all times!

Open an Online Shop.  It’s extremely easy to set up…it really is!  This will push you to create what you want to create because you will feel that your Online Shop’s shelves are in desperate need of stock.  This will hopefully push you even more.

Focus on one thing at a time! I tell myself that day in and day out.

What is a typical creative day for you?
7.00amI love my sleep so I really have to push myself to get up & walk zombified to the coffee machine!!  All good to go now! I keep on top of the kids to get ready for school etc.
8.15 Drop off kids – do a little happy dance…No of course I don’t do that!!!

Do you have a  Favourite quote?“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken”
And "If the mountain won’t come to Muhammed then Muhammed must go to the Mountain”

Do you have a favourite movie or CD you love to listen or watch while creating?
Caro Emerald, Ellie Golding, Lily Allen, and Eliza Doolittle. Generally anything upbeat that keeps me motivated.

What is your favourite handmade item that you have bought?
cute aqua coloured crochet Beret from a local lady who is just starting up her own little business.

Where can we find you online/stockists?

How long have you been a member of BrisStyle?2 months now  Yippee!

And How did you find out about BrisStyle?
Instagram and the Markets. I went onto the BrisStyle Instagram account and followed their page.  I attended a Workshop and spoke to one of the Events Co-ordinators and it peaked my interest from thereon in.

Why did you become a member Yvonne?
I wanted to create as many opportunities to get Lemon Doll Illustrations widely known in the Handmade and Artisan world.  My head and my heart advised me to jump on board with BrisStyle to promote my small Business and learn from other well respected and highly regarded creatives in this industry.  BrisStyle also have an excellent reputation in the Handmade and Creative world.  I also love how they have a passion for supporting small businesses.

Last but not least, Why do you craft?
For the pure LOVE of it x

Thanks so much Yvonne and Dolly for sharing a little bit of yourself with us all.
We look forward to seeing you very soon debuting at the next Brisstyle market.
